WILDLIFE CONSERVATION MEETS NASCAR @ Infineon Raceway

for the Toyota Save Mart 350 and the Bennett Lane Winery 200

JUNE 20 & 21, 2009

The California Outdoor Heritage Alliance stepped up to the plate to represent ALL wild life/conservation organizations “collectively” at this weekend’s race at Infineon Speedway. For many years the dissected efforts of many passionate, dedicated outdoor and wildlife enthusiasts voiced their positions on pertinent issues individually through their separate organizations. This dissection of power has left many issues unresolved simply because we were being represented as a mere percentage of the united voice of sportsmen’s. In today’s economically challenged society we face ever-growing obstacles to be heard and this is a great way to start that process. “Strength in Numbers”, should be the collective mantra.

Bill Gaines - President, Rick Bulloch - Field Director and the entire COHA Team took on the challenge of bridging this collection of Organizations. Getting all of these groups on the same page is a feat all unto itself. But once everything was in place it was obvious that their vision had paid off. With the help of an anonymous donor, COHA and its affiliates sponsored the number 36 car of Brian Simms for the big NASCAR Sprint Race on Sunday AND the #6 car of young and rising driver Jason Bowles for the Bennett Lane Winery 200 in the Camp World West Series race on Saturday.

Fridays qualifying efforts for our # 36 car didn’t go as well as expected, with the 36 blowing its engine at the end of the qualifying run. As you can image spirits in the big Collective Wildlife Tent were down. BUT within 90 minutes word came down from the COHA suite that arrangements had been made to co-sponsor another car – the 08 car

of road course expert and racing commentator - Boris Said. We were all treated to the highs and lows of NASCAR in a very short time.

Under the bright Sonoma sunshine race fans, over 100,000 strong, saw great action all weekend. The Saturday Bennett Lane Winery 200 was a battle from the beginning, Patrick Long – Sunrise Ford Team in the #9 car would start at the pole. Rookie sensation Joey Logano – Joe Gibbs Racing would be in the mix all day and running up front for most of the race. Jason Bowles also from Sunrise Ford set back and ran a very patient, safe race.
With about 15 laps to go the teammates, Jason and Patrick would get together and apply relentless pressure on Logano. At the
very last turn of the race, with Logano in first, Long in second and Bowles in third. The number 9 car of Long would bump Logano in an attempt to get around and kick Logano off the track. The race ended with the 9 first and Jason Bowles in the 6 second. BUT after review the 9 car was disqualified, giving the victory to the number 6 car of Jason Bowles for his second victory in a row at Infineon! COHA and all of its affiliates had their first NASCAR victory together as a collective voice!

As Wanda Gaines would later say, “The outdoor industry has many reasons to celebrate.”

On a beautiful Sunday in the Sonoma hills for the Toyota Save Mart 350, Boris Said in the 08 car would be in the spotlight much of the afternoon, running in the top five for much of that time. The outdoorheritage.org website would be featured numerous times on National TV. Unfortunately after a pit penalty and a bump or two from his fellow NASCAR drivers Boris would find himself in the back of the pack with a 24th place finish. Kasey Kahne and Tony Stewart would battle right to the end of a very exciting race, giving Kahne his first road course victory.

Collectively you could not have asked for a better weekend of action, successes, failures and most importantly “Unity”, Unity, of all the participating organizations to join forces as one voice and one goal. This is the real victory, a victory for wildlife, habitat and our historical past that we all work so hard to secure and protect. Hopefully this is the start of a NEW way of approaching the challenges that we all face in the future. Way to take the lead COHA!
